Celebrating National Women’s Health Week May 13th - 19th
In addition to Sunday, May 13th being Mother’s Day this year, it also marked the beginning of National Women’s Health Week (NWHW). This is the 19th year that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Women’s Health, has dedicated an entire week to serve as a reminder for women to prioritize making health and wellness a larger part of their life. Another important consideration for women interested in creating a healthier lifestyle is that your actions may differ based on your particular age group. NWHW has created links to the ‘Steps You Can Take for Better Health’ based on your age. For example, if you are a woman in her 60’s, there are specific steps you can take to make better health choices as compared to someone in her 30’s who has her own health goals.
Initial Steps for All Women to Consider
- Schedule a Well Woman visit with your doctor or a recommended preventative screening based on your age.
- Commit to Getting Active for 30 minutes every day this week!
- Choose healthy foods to see how easy it is for you to get into better food habits.
- Be cognizant of your mental health and stress levels this week and make an effort to get more sleep.
- Be aware of and avoid unhealthy behaviors such as drinking too much alcohol, smoking, texting while driving, or even not wearing your seatbelt.
Participating in National Women’s Health Week at Work
Believe it or not, even nursing professionals sometimes need a little reminder about the importance of taking care of one’s self through healthier choices and physical activity. Here are a few ideas that you can take the lead in promoting NWHW activities.
- Organize lunchtime walks with your co-workers. Since most of us have pedometers or personal fitness trackers, turn it into a competition for whoever takes the most steps for the week.
- Since we all love potlucks, organize a luncheon where everyone brings their favorite healthy dish.
- Talk to a local fitness instructor and see if you can arrange a free yoga or Zumba class.
- Play your favorite music in the lunch room and ask everyone to get up and dance.
No matter what you decide to do to participate and celebrate this week, don’t forget to share your activities on social media. Take pictures of you and your co-workers being active or eating healthy and share the photos on social media using the hashtag #NWHW. There are also pre-written NWHW messages that you can copy and paste into your social media accounts to help promote the weeklong events.
